ABOUT THE WI
The Women's Institute was formed in 1915 with the aim of giving new growth to rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's direction has expanded and the WI is now the largest voluntary organisation in the United Kingdom. The WI will celebrate its centenary year in 2015 and currently has 21,000 members with 6,600 WIs.
The WI is instrumental in a unique way of providing women with educational opportunities and the opportunity to learn new skills. Also to take part in a wide range of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
Being a member can enable you to have you voice heard and to make a significant impact on local, national and global issues by getting involved with WI Campaigns.
In recent years the WI campaigns have helped to achieve:
More Midwives, The WI Great Food Debate, Love Your Libraries, Care Not Custody, Country of Origin Labelling(COOL), and SOS for Honeybees.
To date the WI are campaigning to raise an awareness for organ donation. The National Federation notes that three people will die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant. Therefore we are asking that we make our wishes known about organ donation to families, friends and members of the local community. For further details about this campaign or any of the others mentioned.
